Organizational Context

 The Vehicle Mechanics position is under the direct supervision of Admin/Finance Officer. The incumbent is responsible for keeping and maintaining the assigned UNHCR vehicle(s) as per technical guidance and specifications established by the organisation. He/she is required to follow strict instructions and security guidance provided by the supervisor. While basic function of a Vehicle Mechanic is to maintain the official vehicles of UNHCR and to perform maintenance and repair of UNHCR vehicles and related service.

 The incumbent has regular contacts with staff members within the UNHCR office and with service providers outside UNHCR involving a limited exchange of information.

 Responsibility

  • Repair and Maintain the UNHCR Vehicles and other logistical assets in the area of responsibility.
  • Ensuring that the vehicles, spare parts and other logistical assets of the UNHCR Vehicles remain in a good working condition on a daily basis and in those situations where needed in accordance with manufacturers recommendations.
  • Assisting the assessment of roadworthy conditions of Vehicles for departure to field locations, Monitor vehicles wear and tear.
  • Establish maintenance plan for the Vehicles under area of responsibility.
  • Providing mechanical knowledge and support services to all the drivers.
  • Act as a support driver in the Office where necessary.
  • Draw up a list of routine spare parts which are frequently required for the vehicle by type/models.
  • Maintain an accurate vehicle statistical data records on mechanical conditions.
  • Ensuring effective mechanical support to the Vehicles in cases of emergency during missions.
  • Identifying and define the best strategy and action for securing good conditions of the vehicles, spare parts and other logistical needs for Vehicles in cases of break downs.
  • Responsible for building and sustaining effective relationships with local mechanical maintenance companies.
  • Performing any other tasks.

Essential Minimum Qualifications and Experience

  • At least 5 years proven Field experience in vehicle mechanics;
  • Fluency in English
  • Advanced communication skills are essential;
  • 4WD / off-road driving experience;
  • Capacity to work in groups and multicultural environments;
  • Candidates must hold a driving license;

Desirable Qualifications & Competencies 

  • Completion of secondary school or equivalent technical school with post-secondary certificate/training in vehicle Mechanics.
  • Diploma in Mechanical Engineering
