Organizational Context

In February, at the African Union (AU) Summit in Addis Ababa, African leaders launched a new, pertinent and timely theme for 2019, naming it, “The Year of Refugees, Returnees and Internally Displaced Persons: Towards Durable Solutions to Forced Displacement in Africa.”

It comes at a time when Africa is also marking major anniversaries for two pioneering and highly influential treaties: The 1969 OAU (Organization of African Unity) Refugee Convention and the 2009 African Union Convention on Internally Displaced Persons, also known as the Kampala Convention

To commemorate these milestone anniversaries and promote the new AU theme of the year across Africa – the continent most heavily affected by forced displacement with more than a third, or 20 million, of the world’s forcibly displaced – the AU, with support from UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, and other partners, has launched a series of activities known as Project 2019.
Project 2019 includes six continental consultative meetings to be held in different countries. These will address a wide range of issues, with particular focus on root causes, durable solutions and bolstering the capacity of governments to tackle forced population displacement. A related roundtable, on root causes and solutions, was held in Addis Ababa on 9 February 2019.
 
The Project will also feature partner-led activities, including training and capacity building, and community engagements. The whole process will culminate in November with an AU Humanitarian Summit in a venue to be confirmed. This high-level meeting is expected to adopt an outcome document, including a plan of action, which will also draw on earlier discussions. 
 
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Liaison Office to the African Union and United Nations Economic Commissioner for Africa (RAUECA) seeks two Interns to assist staff in implementing a range of activities in relation to the African Union theme of the year 2019.  For a description of UNHCR’s work, please see http://www.unhcr.org. Note that this is an internship for undergraduate students, graduate students, or recent graduates.

Accountability

  • Provide assistance to RAUECA staff and members of the Project 2019 Secretariat towards a successful implementation of planned activities;
  • Regularly update oneself and gain unique knowledge about the African Union priorities and activities during 2019 and beyond.

Authority

  • Collaborate and work closely with RAUECA and Project 2019 Secretariat team;
  • Effectively manage time and priorities to meet all of the above responsibilities;
  • Identify goals to work toward over the course of the internship.

Responsibility

  • Provide assistance in the organization of and participate in meetings and other activities planned under Project 2019;
  • Support the drafting of notes and updates on implementation of Project 2019 activities;
  • Carry out support to research and publication activities on various topics as necessary.
  • Perform any other task as required. 

Essential Minimum Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree, either already obtained or in-process;
  • Strong interest in the rights of refugees, internally displaced persons or Stateless persons , international relations, human rights and humanitarian response;
  • General technological proficiency a plus;
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize with minimal supervision. Attention to detail required.
  • English language (fluency required);
